Preparing for your Internet Safety Parents evening
So you have organised a date for an Internet Safety session for your parents... how do you maximise attendance? You are probably concerned about the safety of children when they go on the Internet and evidently understand how important the subject is. We have presented over 250 parents evenings and the hardest task falls to you, to encourage and entice parents to attend these sessions. The information and resources here are to help save you time and to guide you towards a successful event.
How to communicate with parents?
- Do you use any sms messaging systems to communicate with parents? If you do, we can provide you with short messages you can send out – please contact enquiries@swgfl.org.uk
- Can you use email to contact parents?
- Do you have a news or bulletin area of your school website or Learning Platform?
- Do you have a school newsletter?
- Do you have screens around school displaying messages (reception area etc)?
What messages can I give?
6 weeks prior to the event
- Send out an invitation letter to all parents – this can be via a printed letter and/or email.
- You are free to use (or change) this letter. You could also include sections in your school website and newsletter.
- Perhaps you could print off this poster and display at school, in the reception area and public areas.
- You are free to download our unique film advert ‘Do you know?’ to play on screens around your school – this can be downloaded from http://www.swgfl.org.uk/Staying-Safe/e-Safety-Movies.
- You may be able to entice parents by including a raffle. Some schools have obtained prizes from local industry and raffled these at the events.
2 weeks prior to the event
- Send out a reminder notice to all parents, again this could be via a printed letter / email / sms.
- You are free to use (or change) this reminder letter.
D Day
- Make sure that parents are reminded on the day – perhaps reprint the posters and make it clear that the parents evening is ‘THIS EVENING’.
